Jefferson Avenue Bridge Replacement Project over I-64
Why Does Jefferson Avenue Bridge Over Interstate 64 Need Improvements?
The Jefferson Avenue Bridge was built in the early 1960s and has deteriorated beyond the point of simply repairing it. This bridge structure needs to be completely replaced. The clearance between the Jefferson Avenue Bridge and Interstate 64 has also been a point of concern. This project is on hold until the deck replacement project on the double deck is completed in 2012.
What Improvements on the Jefferson Avenue Bridge are Being Proposed?
Remove and replace the Jefferson Avenue Bridge over Interstate 64. This bridge will be built in the same location with a higher bridge clearance over the interstate to meet current Federal Highway standards.
Widen the bridge to handle the traffic for a future reconstruction project that will make Jefferson Avenue a full interchange.
Increase the length of the entrance and exit ramps, and relocate them closer to the interstate.
Upgrade the sidewalks, bike lanes and pedestrian ramps to ADA (American Disabilities Act)
standards.

How Will Traffic Be Impacted While Construction Is Under Way?
There will be a complete closure of Interstate 64 during a weekend when the Jefferson Avenue Bridge is removed. The date of the interstate closure is TBA. MoDOT will keep motorists informed when a finalized date is scheduled.
Various lane closures will occur on the interstate throughout the construction of the bridge.
Each entrance and exit ramp at this intersection will close one at a time for approximately three weeks of reconstruction.
