Why Do the Interstate 55 Bridges over the BNSF Railroad near Festus need to be replaced?
These bridges have reached their useful service life, and are being fully replaced as part of the Safe and Sound program, which are two of 802 Safe and Sound bridges projected to be repaired or replaced before 2013. The new bridge, when in place, will also be wide enough to accommodate the future growth and expansion of I-55.
What Improvements Will MoDOT Accomplish?
This project consists of construction of a new wider bridge that will carry northbound and southbound traffic on Interstate 55 between Herculaneum and Festus.
What are the benefits?
MoDOT will have reduced maintenance costs in the near future with the new bridge.
When Will Construction Begin and End?
The project began in mid-July 2011 and is expected to be completed by November 2012. The project was awarded to Gershenson Contractor for approximately $4.5 million.
How Will Traffic Be Impacted During Construction?
There will be various lane closures on I-55 in each direction during non-peak travel times. Crews will perform this work during evening/night hours. Two lanes on the interstate will remain open during peak travel times (daytime hours).
