I-270 and West Florissant Road
I-270 Corridor Study
History and Background
In 2005, the Board of Directors of the East-West Gateway Council of Governments adopted Legacy 2030, the transportation plan for the St. Louis region. The plan recommended a study of the I-270 corridor in North St. Louis County. Several important factors and trends were considered in making this recommendation: increased traffic volumes and crashes as contributors to safety problems along the corridor; aging and outdated infrastructure; and the growing and significant role I-270 plays in commercial freight movement (for both regionally-generated and cross-country freight ) and in commuter travel.
In 2009, MoDOT staff met with local government officials and the Transportation Committee for North County Incorporated, to discuss the growing need for a study of this segment of I-270 in North St. Louis County.
Recently, MoDOT has worked with the East-West Gateway Council of Governments and others to prioritize the region’s major transportation system improvement needs; and to determine how best to fund those needs. Stakeholders have consistently pointed to the northern area of I-270 as one of the region’s top priority corridors in need of improvement.
The focus of the study will be the approximately 12-mile stretch of I-270 in North St. Louis County, between McDonnell Boulevard and Route 367.
This study will fully investigate the complex factors affecting traffic flow and safety in the area. This work will be performed by MoDOT staff, with resource support from the East-West Gateway Council of Governments (EWGCOG), Metro and others stakeholders.
The following interchanges will be included in the study:
