HANNIBAL – MoDOT, BNSF, and the City of Palmyra have been working together to improve safety at railroad crossings. "We've received support from the City and those attending a public meeting, yet we invite others to share comments about the project," said MoDOT Railroad Safety Specialist Donald Schwartze.
MoDOT is proposing new flashing light signals and gates be installed on the crossings at New Street and Sloan Street. In addition, a pedestrian walkway will be added at Sloan Street. Also proposed is the closure of the highway at the railroad crossing on Pocahontas Street. Barricades will be permanently installed on the highway at the crossing, and a pedestrian fence will be installed to prevent pedestrian trespassing. "It is illegal to walk on a railroad track, and we want to ensure everyone's safety," Schwartze said.
The public is invited to make comments about these improvements and changes. Comments can be made below or by sending comments to Mr. Donald R. Schwartze, Multimodal Operations, MoDOT, 830 MoDOT Drive, PO Box 270, Jefferson City, MO 65102-0270. For questions about the project, call Schwartze at 573-751-6595. Comments are being accepted until January 8, 2011.
