Five
local students won awards in a poster contest where they depicted
the daily life of Missouri's road workers and the dangers
they face. The contest was sponsored by the American Traffic
Safety Services Foundation (ATSSF) and administered by the
Missouri Department of Transportation. ATSSF represents
men and women nationwide who work in roadway construction
zones -behind the cones and barrels.
Children in grades kindergarten through sixth grade from all
over the country were invited to participate. They were asked
to think about the day of a highway worker, whose workplace
might be smack in the middle of a superhighway, making their
job one of the most dangerous jobs.
In honor of the national and state winners from our area,
MoDOT, Bross Construction and Bleigh Construction hosted a
press conference and reception at the Mark Twain Dinette May
16. In addition to the students and their families,
the Missouri State Highway Patrol, media and school representatives
were invited to attend. Representatives from the ATSSF
and MoDOT presented the cash awards and gifts at the reception.
Schools that had students winning national awards received
a cash match of the award prize.
