The minor roads, or less traveled roads, make up 27,000 miles of the states 32,800 miles. About 20% of traffic travels on these roads.
While five years ago, Missourians told us the priority was to improve major roads; now the focus of Missourians is minor roads and bridges.
It is our goal to get 70% of minor roads surface in good condition. Right now in the 8 counties of District 4 only 52% are good. If no other minor roads deteriorate (which is unlikely), then this year's improvements to minor road would bring the total up to 71% good. However, MoDOT knows this is just the tip of the iceberg to what needs to be done to these roads.
Missourians want to see wider shoulders, bigger signs, and rumble stripes on these minor roads. However, with the current levels of funding that is not possible.
- Missouri has the seventh largest highway system in the U.S.
- We have more than
32,800 miles of highways.
- Our highway miles are more than Iowa, Nebraska
and Kansas combined.
- We’re largely funding our system with
a gas tax.
- At 17 cents a gallon, our tax is one of the lowest
in the country.
- Gas tax hasn’t been raised in 12 years.
These
statistics show what we’re up against.
MoDOT will continue to invest your tax dollars wisely, getting projects done quickly and at the best price possible. However without additional resources important projects like upgrading the minor roads will have to wait.
