Bridge inspection has prompted the immediate closure of the Northbound Route 291 Bridge -- also known as the Liberty Bend Bridge -- over the Missouri River until further notice. MoDOT anticipates the bridge could be closed for several months.
Originally built in 1949, this bridge carries more than 10,000 vehicles daily.
Rust has damaged the bridge, prompting the closure. Review an aerial view of the crossover on bridge.
MoDOT is closing this bridge to maintain the safety of the traveling public and will act quickly to award an emergency contract to construct a crossover to minimize the impacts to traffic by moving all traffic to the southbound Route 291 Bridge. This will allow a better traffic flow while engineers further examine the northbound bridge and determine the repairs needed.
Watch Chris Redline, Assistant District Engineer for MoDOT, discuss why the bridge closed.
