Old Route 50 and Route PP
Intersection Improvements Near McGirk
The Missouri Department of Transportation proposes to improve the intersection of Old Route 50 and Route PP near McGirk in Moniteau County to accommodate longer vehicles (i.e. buses and most trucks). Work includes relocating Old Route 50 near the intersection by shifting it south by 12 feet. The turning area from Route PP to Old Route 50 will also be widened so large vehicles have more room to complete their turns.
The improvements would cost approximately $90,000. Work would begin in fall 2011 and be completed by the end of the year. When these improvements are complete, Moniteau Countywill take ownership of Route PP and Old Route 50. The county and Union Pacific will also close access to Old Route 50 at State Street, as railroad crossing improvements have already been made on Route PP, bringing it to current safety standards.
U.S. 50 Resurfacing in Moniteau, Morgan & Pettis Counties
The Missouri Department of Transportation is resurfacing nearly 24 miles of U.S. 50 from east of Sedalia to Tipton. Work to resurface driving lanes and shoulders began in April 2011 and is scheduled for completion in fall 2011. APAC-Missouri, Inc. of Columbia, Mo. was awarded the contract for the work.
The Missouri Department of Transportation will resurface almost 10 miles of Route 87, from Route C in Moniteau County to just north of Business 54 in Miller County. APAC-Missouri, Inc. of Columbia, Mo. was awarded the contract for the work. The resurfacing is scheduled for summer 2011.
Route 179 Resurfacing in Cole and Moniteau Counties
The Missouri Department of Transportation will resurface approximately 22 miles of Route 179, from Route 87 in Moniteau County to just north of West Main Street in Jefferson City. Jefferson Asphalt Company of Jefferson City, Mo. was awarded the contract for the work. The resurfacing is scheduled to take place in summer 2011.
U.S. 50 Relocation from St. Martins to west of California
The Missouri Department of Transportation relocated U.S. 50 from St. Martins in Cole County to west of California in Moniteau County. The first phase of the project consisted of 11 miles of new four lane highway between the existing St. Martins interchange to Route K, east of California. Phase Two is 8.35 miles from Route K to west of California, and included grading, drainage work and a new interchange at Route 87. From Route 87 around California, the highway is now two lanes with paved shoulders.
Construction on Phase One began in early 2007 and was completed in October 2008. Phase Two construction began in late summer 2008 and was completed in July 2010. The contractor for both phases is Illinois Valley Paving, Co., of Springfield, Il.
On Friday, Sept. 10, 2010, a new section of U.S. 50 in Moniteau County was formally dedicated in memory of a Missouri Department of Transportation employee who was killed in the line of duty in 2002.
The Missouri Department of Transportation has installed a "Yield on Flashing Yellow Arrow" signal indication at the intersection of U.S. 50, Route 5 and Route B in Tipton.
The "Yield on Flashing Yellow Arrow" is a new signal indication in mid-Missouri. A flashing yellow arrow means left turns are allowed, but you must first yield to oncoming traffic and pedestrians and then proceed with caution. It will replace the traditional "Left Turn Yield On Green" indication currently used at the intersection of U.S. Route 50 and Route 5.
